Monuments and Sites

TSODILO HILLS

These hills are located west of the main road between Sepopa and Shakawe, about 300km from Maun and accessible only by 4x4 vehicles.

The Tsodilo hills display about 4000 prehistoric rock paintings of animals, geometric and human designs.

Shelters in the rocks, ancient mines and prehistoric village sites are scattered through out the hills.

This is an attractive area that appeals to researchers in bio-diversity, hikers and mere adventure lovers including pleasure seekers. Rock painting - Tsodilo HillsOccasionally, kudu, leopard, ostritch, antbear, monkey and brown hyena can be seen.

LEPHOKOLE

Lephokole is another massive archaeological monument north east of Bobonong. There are stone walls, rock art and various plant species growing on unusually exposed granite outcrops and complemented by Majande with a "hearing bone" stone wall designs.

VUKWI RUINS

These ruins resemble a small scale Zimbabwe ruins or Khami type located some 90km northwest of Francistown near Masunga village. Adjacent to the ruins there is the Zwenshambe and Kalakamati prehistoric art.

TOU-NTSWE-MOGALA

An extremely valuable prehistoric site located on a flat topped hill which was occupied from the period 1000 AD to 1700 AD. The site marks the early formation of statehood in the Central District. It is pivotal to other major sites such as Mapungubwe and Monamutapa both in the Republic of South Africa.

OTHER SITES

Around Gaborone, there are several sites, such as Modipe Hill famous for prehistoric copper smelting; Matsieng rock engraving; Kolobeng where Missionary David Livingstone stayed with Bakwena; Dimawe where the Batswana defeated the Boers in 1854 and Magagarape a prehistoric site dating 300 - 400 AD.
